Spotlight On Business – Joan Lynch

We would like to spotlight Joan Lynch of The Long Island Center For Independent Living. She has worked at (LICIL) for 32 years and was recently named its Executive Director. Joan is also Second Vice President of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce and soon to be First Vice President as of January 2015.

Lynch has lived in Levittown for forty five years. She has three children and four grandchildren, is an ardent reader, likes gardening and shares her home with three Labrador Retrievers.

Lynch has a strong belief in helping people with disabilities and the frail elderly thus her long tenure with The Long Island Center For Independent Living, Inc.

Lynch is very humble and wants to spotlight her organization rather than herself so she had the following to say:

(LICIL) has been serving people with disabilities residing in Nassau County for 34 years. The Center is located in Levittown at 3601 Hempstead Turnpike.

The Center’s mission is to serve as a home base where persons with disabilities can access services and information that can open doors for a more productive, healthy secure life.

LICIL offers persons with disabilities and the frail elderly the following:

Benefits advisement: SSI, Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare and other benefits

Peer Counseling: Communicating with someone who has been through the same or similar situations.

Advocacy: Help consumers strengthen their advocacy skills

Housing Guidance: Provide information on low cost housing listings, the section 8 program housing search techniques.

Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Services: managed by Susan McCormack, the Director of CDPAS. This program allows consumers to direct their personal assistant, and the assistant can be a neighbor, relative or good friend. This service is available to Medicaid eligible individuals.

LICIL also offers information and referrals, independent living skills, equipment loan, wheelchair accessible transportation, senior and veterans support and ADA( Americans With Disability Act) compliance consultation.

LICIL’s staff consists of experienced professionals of all abilities who are dedicated in assisting consumers in getting the services they need.

Services are also provided to the Latino Community through LICIL’s Hispanic Outreach Service (HOS) by culturally sensitive, bilingual staff. HOS is managed by Grisselle Rivera-Muicciolo the Director of HOS.

The Center also has a Readers Theater Group and an Art Class that is always open for new members. The Center has many workshops and events throughout the year.
